The 1939 Alfa 6C at The Amelia

The 1939 Alfa 6C at The AmeliaSome years ago my friend Andy Reid invited me to bunk in with him at The Hilton Head Concours. We had a great time and have mostly roomed together when our schedules allow. For Amelia we have been doing VRBO places with our friends Peter Singhof and Dirk De Jager, European photographers extraordinaire.

This year, Andy was asked to represent a car for judging and we moved into The Ritz as part of the deal. It was a nice perk for the weekend, and basically I was the “Back Up Plan” should anything go awry mechanically. I met some great people and had a wonderful weekend as always.

Here’s Andy’s story published in the Classic Cars Journal:

No One Races Alone

No One Races Alone

A few weeks ago I got involved in an online conversation where someone claimed that the only reason we can’t go racing is that organizers would demand a driver’s meeting, and if we could just do the meeting on our phones we’d be just fine to go racing again. I quickly...

Over the past week I had two customer visits from two different types of customers. It got me thinking about the differences between the two, both really nice guys who want work done on their cars. The main difference is that for one, it wasn’t his first rodeo with a...

Telling Stories on the Driven Radio Show

Telling Stories on the Driven Radio Show

I was happily invited to yet another podcast interview, this time to have some fun with the guys at the Drive Radio Show. It’s hosted by Brett Hatfield, auto journalist, Auction Analyst for Sports Car Market, and editor of readthedriven.com, plus Corey Pratt of Craving Cars from YouTube, and Mark “Catfish” Groves, radio veteran and owner of Magnificent Cowlick Media.

They wanted to talk to me about buying a restoration shop in your mid-50s, what to look for in a restoration shop, and what I won’t work on. But it quickly turned into stories of how I got started in racing, some of the fun I’ve had, and eventually devolved into the biggest mistake I ever made (in a car.)

The best part? If you listen closely at the end of the show, I get a “That guy is hilarious” comment after I signed off. Works for me.

Enjoy
-John

What is the Digital Path Forward?

Sports Car Market Magazine

There’s a genuine satisfaction in being asked your opinion on a professional topic. It usually means that your opinion carries some weight as an expert. When the request is from Keith Martin’s Sports Car Market, it’s particularly satisfying.

I was asked to join a roundtable panel of peers to discuss the effect of electronics and digital controls in the restoration industry. It was an interesting topic and I enjoyed researching and composing a response. To read the roundtable content, click on the images of the pages to read the PDFs, and thanks to SCM for the opportunity.

Podcasting with “Assorted Conversations”

I added podcasting to my portfolio of interviews lately, and it was a great time. My friends Helen and Maureen explore people’s pursuit of their passions through their podcast “Assorted Conversations”. These conversations are with individuals who have found that special spark in an activity or pastime they have gravitated to and passionately jumped into feet first. We talked about everything from flipping my first race car to how I landed at Sport and Specialty.

I often refer to my ownership of Sport and Specialty as my third act. It doesn’t mean the previous two acts were unenjoyable, to the contrary, I’ve been blessed with many fun and meaningful work environments over the years. I simply define this time as a unique opportunity to pursue my passion of sports cars, combined with my experience as a businessman. More third act than last act, because who knows what lies ahead?

If you’ve wondered about how I got to my “Third Act”, give a listen. Also make sure to look at the other interviews they have done. There’s some pretty interesting insights in to jobs you never knew existed! Thanks!

You can get to the podcast through their website Assorted Conversations.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Sports car Market Magazine’s John Nikas about the history of Sport and Specialty and how we all ended up here.

It was a fun little piece, and very well put together. Listen in and let me know what you think.
